The IHRL program is the first of its kind in the Middle East. It is known for its high quality, American-style legal education with an emphasis on the legal framework for protection of human rights. The Master’s degree that it offers - open to graduate students with a degree in law, political science or a closely related social science subject- includes academic and practical instruction on the instruments and processes for the protection of individuals and groups before International, regional and domestic organizations. The program includes instruction on several courses, such as; international law; human rights in the Middle East; human right in Africa; international refugee law; citizenship in the Arab world; Muslims in Europe; and The UN and the question of Palestine. The list of courses generally aims to provide students with a global legal education, as well as an understanding of legal and political issues relevant for the Middle East and Africa.

The Department of Law is interested in attracting intellectually curious and thoughtful candidates from a variety of legal systems and backgrounds and with various career plans. The diversity of the participants in our programs contributes significantly to the educational experience of all students at the Department of Law.
The AUC’s Department of Law encompasses a diverse body of faculty. Coming from leading Universities in the USA, Europe, and the Middle East, they are active thoughtful scholars, mentors to individual students and advisors to the Law Student Association (LSA).

AUC Department of Law draws on the teaching assistance of several practicing lawyers and human rights activists working with international law firms, NGOs, and intergovernmental agencies, who not only offer the students instruction on legal practice and current human rights issues, but also assist in finding working opportunities and internships in those law firms and organizations. In addition, law department faculty maintains strong ties with leading Universities in the USA and Europe, the likes of Harvard, Yale, and Cambridge, which enables them to assist AUC Law graduates in acquiring scholarships and admission in graduate legal studies programs at those institutions.
