announces an invitation for applications for a
ERIK CASTRÉN FELLOWSHIP IN INTERNATIONAL LAW for the academic year 2008-2009

The Erik Castrén Fellowship is a postdoctoral position for an academic specializing in the general aspects (including history and theory) of international law and human rights. The fellowship is situated in the Erik Castrén Institute of International Law and Human Rights (ECI) at the University of Helsinki . It is awarded for one year at a time. The present announcement concerns the award of the fellowship for the 1 September 2008 - 31 August 2009 .
The fellowship is in the amount of 30.000 EUR. It provides opportunities for scholarly research in co-operation with Professor Martti Koskenniemi (Academy professor and Director of ECI) and Professor Jan Klabber (Professor of Law and Director of the Centre of Excellence in Global Governance Research) as well as a close contact with the rest of the staff of ECI. The holder of the Fellowship will be given time, guidance, office space and access to the wide range of University of Helsinki facilities in order to conduct independent research on his or her chosen topic of research. The holder of the Fellowship is invited to participate in the various academic activities of ECI. However, emphasis will be on the conduct of high-level research on a general topic in the fields of international law and human rights.
Eligible scholars will have completed a Ph.D. preferably no longer than 5 years before applying. Selection is based upon scholarly excellence and on the suggested outline of the research project. During the tenure, the fellow is expected to reside in Helsinki and participate actively in the intellectual life of the Institute.

The application must include:
- complete curriculum vitae, including a list of publications
- documentation of education, certified copies of diplomas
- overview of the doctoral thesis (max. 10 pages)
- two letters of recommendation
- proposal for the research project (max. 10 pages)
All candidates will be notified of the decisions by January 31, 2008 .
